Genesee Serves is recognizing some of the amazing individuals who are helping to make our community a better place. This month, we are showcasing Vion Wooten, an AmeriCorps VISTA serving at the United Way of Genesee County.

Originally from Belleville, Michigan, Vion attended Flint's Baker College where he participated in the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration.

Vion Wooten

Vion first became involved with AmeriCorps in Flint in the summer of 2016 as a Summer Associate VISTA member with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint. As a Summer Associate VISTA, he served to build capacity for educational and leadership programs for teenagers at the Club. From his summer term, Vion transitioned to a year-long position, serving at the United Way as an AmeriCorps VISTA member specializing in education. In this role, Vion implements and strengthens educational programs, including A to Z Learn with Me!, a program to ensure every baby leaves the maternity ward with materials they need to start their love of learning early, and Reading Oasis, a program to build reading centers in elementary schools. His undertakings include building initiatives in literacy, recruiting volunteers, and building stronger connections between educational programs. He ultimately hopes to enhance volunteer engagement in Genesee County education systems and build partnerships across districts and sectors to increase the effectiveness of programs.

When asked about his commitment to service, Vion says he most enjoys being able to give back to his community. Since joining the Student Council in the 6th grade, Vion has been motivated by a desire to help people.

Joining the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity in college also opened doors for Vion to be active in the community.  Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity's motto is "Culture for Service, Service for Humanity," and their acting principles are of brotherhood, scholarship, and service. Vion says that without his fraternity, he wouldn't have known about the opportunity to serve with AmeriCorps.

Most recently in Flint, he's volunteered for Relay for Life, Carriage Town Ministries, Whaley Children's Center, Adopt A Highway, Sleepout for with the Homeless, and Random Acts of Kindness.

Genesee Serves thanks you for your service, Vion!
