Volunteer: Warehouse Volunteer

We are in need of volunteers to help us sort food which includes but is not limited to, dry boxed, cans, bread, produce, dairy and frozen meat.

“What will a volunteer be doing?”

Our warehouse processing area represents both the heart of our operation and our greatest need. You will be trained to conscientiously check, clean, label, sort, and box food and non-food packaged items, which will then be made available to our partner agencies for distribution in eastern Michigan. You will also help keep the warehouse and agencies shopping areas organized and clean. From time to time the Food Bank hosts food drives and special fund-raising events and we always need helping hands and minds to perform a variety of services. After you have had some experience with our food processing operation, you can volunteer for special projects: food pickups from local donors; speaking on behalf of the Food Bank in the community; agency liaison work; office and computer based work. Driven by either donor stipulations and or other regulatory bodies, volunteer duties can be multi-faceted and are dependent upon priorities of warehouse capacities or product shelf-life.

The majority of your time will be spent in the warehouse and for this reason proper dress is required. Keep in mind the warehouse temperature changes with the temperature outside. Remember Clean and Comfortable.

Pants-Long pants that fit (i.e. Blue jeans.) Must have no holes or rips and wear a belt if necessary. No shorts or cut off anything.

Volunteer: Success Club Mentor

Holmes STEM Academy’s Success Club got its start thanks to the My Brother's Keeper Initiative, the dedication of Principal Thomas, and the Community Education Initiative (CEI).

The Success Club program focuses to help students stay on track and give them a chance to have an adult role model to look up to and who will look forward to seeing them too.

Many of our students suffer from Chronic Absenteeism which is defined as missing 10 percent of a school year for any reason. Some think that a couple absences per month isn't a “big deal,” but if you take those two absences per month x 10 months of school = 20 days of missed school. Students who fall under this category are at a very high risk of retention and ultimately, not graduating.

We are seeking those who have love, compassion, and patience for children in their heart. If you want to make a positive impact on a student's life, this is the position for you.

We ask that you be able to commit to at least two days per week. Four days would be ideal (Monday-Thursday), but we know you're busy, and will need a commitment of two days minimum per week.

We prefer mentors to meet with their students during their lunch hour (11:20am-1:00pm, 3 lunches are covered in this time frame and each is about 30 minutes). Mornings, during their breakfast time and after school can be arranged as well if you have a dedicated time that works with one of our mentees.

Each day will include a 30-minute session. We have activities and books that can be used during your time as a Mentor. This is also a good opportunity to offer homework help, if your mentee needs or prefers that.
