Opportunities From: Genesee and Shiawassee Serves

Volunteer: 9/11 National Day of Service and Rememberance 2025

It’s been more than two decades since the 9/11 attacks, and every year on the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, Americans from all walks of life honor those we lost and the heroes who helped us persevere through service. Together, we help strengthen our nation and inspire a new generation of civic-minded Americans.

This year we will join thousands across America who will clean headstones and beautify VA National Cemeteries. Great Lakes National Cementery is just 1 of 60 across the nation who will host volunteers for Patroits day in partnership with Carry the Load.

Dress is casual and respectful. No open toe shoes or tank tops. We will be outside so, be mindful of the weather. No pets please. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult

Upon completion of your service, a Jersey Mike's box lunch will be provided.

Volunteer: Volunteer Opportunities

Opportunity #1 Volunteers are needed on a daily basis to assist staff members, perform maintenance on the facility, help at the thrift stores, and assist with various seasonal activities at our Adult Rehabilitation Center. Opportunity #2 Volunteers are needed to become part of our Emergency Disaster Services Team. There are many ways you can become involved in serving the community through emergency disaster services. No effective disaster relief operation can operate without the efforts of many volunteers with a diverse range of experience and training. Some people are content to hand out a cup of cold water to a thirsty stranger. Other people seek training at the highest level possible to serve in specialized areas of service. Call to find out how to become involved in disaster services in your area. For additional information contact Becca at 810-869-8711.

As a volunteer blood donor ambassador, you'll ensure donors have a positive experience from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave. Your professionalism and kindness during the blood drive will encourage ongoing donor support.

This role is for you if you…

· Love talking to all kinds of people!

· Demonstrate excellent customer service and comfort working with people.

· You have availability to serve for one 4-6 hour shift per month.

*shifts may vary on quarterly needs depending on your location*

Each volunteer shift, you make a difference and help save a life.

This opportunity requires participation in in-person activities and/or performing work in a Red Cross facility.

Key responsibilities –

Overview of Mobile Blood Drives

· Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location

· Blood collection procedures are whole blood and red cell (no platelets or plasma)

· ‘Mobile’ blood drives change almost every day—with the need to setup and takedown each blood drive, they tend to be faster paced, in a variety of sites, with different donors, sponsors, team members, and chargeperson each drive

· Often requires careful maintenance of donor flow and wait times (typically more donors on the schedule)

· Events confirmed about 6 weeks in advance

Overview of Fixed Sites

· Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location

· Blood collection procedures are whole blood and red cell (no platelets or plasma)

· Staff and equipment tend to be ‘ready to go’ in the same site each day--with fewer donors participating on a frequent basis in longer term procedures (some procedures take as long as 2-2.5 hours per donor) at a Red Cross donor center.

· Similar or same: list of donors, team members and charge people from week to week creates sense of team

· Regular donors become familiar with check-in process, materials and site

· Schedule rarely changes, available several months in advance, a weekly shift ‘adoption’ is highly encouraged. For example – one shift every Tuesday morning or afternoon

All Donor Ambassador roles (Mobile Blood Drives and Fixed Sites)

· Support Red Cross staff by being helpful, flexible, and patient

· Greet donors, explain the donation process as necessary and assist with initial intake and hand offs through the blood donation process

· Manage donor flow and direct donors to Check-In

· Model excellent customer service behaviors.

· Ensure blood donors have relevant information and that questions are answered appropriately while creating a favorable impression of the blood donation process.

· Learn and share the Red Cross story, including the mission, vision, and values

· Work with collections team supervisor or charge staff to match donor’s blood type with the best product for maximum impact (Right Type Mix)

· Check Post Donation Info and time

· Set up and maintain cleanliness in Reception and Hospitality Areas

· Provide customer service to donors in the Hospitality Area by ensuring that each donor is recognized for his/her contribution.

· Check that donor has their post-donation information before leaving the drive

· Report possible adverse post-donation physical reactions to the collections staff. Protect donors from injury during adverse reactions (if able without hurting self)

· May be asked to sanitize/disinfect donor areas and beds

· May make reminder/cancellation calls, re-schedule donor appointments, and perform follow up activities as directed

· Encourage donors to download Donor App, use RapidPas

Volunteer: Hospice Volunteer Opportunity

The Medical Team (Hospice) goal is NOT to end life, but to make the end of life as full and meaningful as possible.  Our society tends to run from death and make it a dreadful experience.  Death is one of those four letter words.  We work to help the patient and family recognize and come to terms with issues of grief and loss and to transform these final times into a beautiful process.  It is a journey through pain, but it can be a journey rich with meaning and joy.  And that is why we are here.  Hospice does not hasten death but allows a person to experience a death with dignity and as pain-free as possible.  We want life to be lived to the fullest until the final breath is taken. After the death of one of our patients, we continue to follow-up with the family for the next 13 months through our bereavement program.

Everyone will experience death at some point in their life, whether it is a relative, close family member, or pet.  Your experience as a volunteer can be a fundamental benefit to our patients and their families, whether that means participating in activities with the patient or simply being by their bedside for social support.

Volunteer: The Medical Team Hospice Volunteer

The Medical Team (Hospice) goal is NOT to end life, but to make the end of life as full and meaningful as possible.  Our society tends to run from death and make it a horrifying experience.  Death is one of those four letter words.  We work to help the patient and family recognize and come to terms with issues of grief and loss and to transform these final times into a beautiful process.  It is a journey through pain, but it can be a journey rich with meaning and joy.  And that is why we are here.  We do not hasten death, but we do allow the person the dignity to die without painful, debilitating treatments that rob the person and their families of meaningful interactions because the person is experiencing painful side effects from treatments.  We want life to be lived to the fullest until the final breath is taken.  And even after death of one of our patients, we continue to follow-up with the family for the next 13 months through our bereavement program.

Everyone has experience death at one point in their life and your experience as a volunteer can become a benefit to our patients and their family with being a part of their life with activities they love or just being bedside for them.

Volunteer: Adopt-a-Day

Adopt-A-Day is designed for corporate sponsors, community organizations and groups of all kinds to come together for a day of team building. The combination of volunteer hours and financial contributions doubles your group’s impact. Not only will your group build connections with each other but they will also be building connections in the community in a truly unique way. The satisfaction that comes from working with your hands, our partner families, and our construction staff will leave your group feeling motivated and fulfilled.

What impact does Adopting a day have on Habitat for Humanity?

When you adopt a day, your donation goes toward the supplies we need to renovate, build, and change lives. The hours that your volunteers put in at our site give us the (hu)man-power we need to complete each project.

Please reach out to Ellen at volunteer@geneseehabitat.org if you are interested in signing up for our adopt-a-day program or to find out the sponsorship levels!

Volunteer: Pollinator Garden Upkeep

We have a beautiful pollinator garden front and center on the DeVries property, and we need your help to keep it looking good all summer long! The garden has a variety of native flowering plants that attract butterflies and other pollinators. During the summer months, weeds grow rapidly, and even some of the pollinator-attracting plants go wild and take over their neighbors in the garden. Volunteers will pull weeds and any plants that are overcrowding. We will show you which plants to keep, and which are weeds.

Schedule is flexible: you can come anytime between dawn and dusk, any day of the week. Please sign up or contact us if you're interested and we can give you more information!

Volunteer: Make a Difference in Genesee County

I can't fix the world's problems. But I will do what I can to make a difference where I am.

Does this sound like something you can relate to? You know that there are a million different ways to help out but not entirely sure where to start. Or you have volunteer in the past and just looking to broaden your experiences. As a hospice volunteer you can truly change a patient's world by just stopping in to see how they are doing or what activities they did for the day. Many of our patients have no visitors and only interact with staff or other residents who may not have the time to sit and talk. Being a hospice volunteer helps one become more compassionate and empathic. Maybe you already have those qualities and want to use them where they are needed the most. Today is the day that you should click that respond button.

Training to become a volunteer is done at the convenience of your time and location. Visiting the patients will be on your time. No schedules or shifts to follow. Flexibility will be at its finest when you come to volunteer with us.

So what are you waiting for? Make that leap that start making a difference where you can!

**Must be 18 years or older to directly visit with patients**

Volunteer: LatinX Flint - Homework Assistance & Academic Enrichment program

The LatinX Technology & Community Center is searching for tutors and teacher aids for our Homework Assistance and Academic Enrichment program

As we continue to follow the safety protocols provided by the CDC, we see the need for additional aid for local youth and families. In an effort to provide our youth with all the necessary tools and resources they need to succeed, LatinX Flint has initiated the Homework Assistance and Academic Enrichment program.

Tutors will assist students, in 30-45 minute sessions, for homework completion. For additional assistance, our teacher aids will help students in Math and Language Literacy courses through our Academic Enrichment course. Both our homework assistance and academic enrichment programs are offered online and in-person, at LatinX Flint.

Volunteer: Success Mentoring and Volunteer Opportunities at Brownell STEM Academy

Success Mentoring Program at Brownell STEM Academy:

There is a distinct need for adult mentors to spend time with Brownell K-2 students.  Our students need adults as caring role models to spend time, eat lunch, read with them, or work on math problems, and play games. The Brownell Community Education office is looking for volunteer mentors over the age of 18 who are available anytime between 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.  Note:  School lunches are served starting at 11 a.m and ending at 12:30 p.m.  Each grade’s lunch period is 30 minutes.  There will also be opportunities available during Community Education’s programming starting at 3:30/4 p.m. Monday - Friday.  We are also always looking for volunteers to assist with Community Education events and Brownell school events throughout the year. We would like our volunteer mentors to be available for their mentees at least 1-2 times a week. We’re looking for volunteers involved in all walks of life in Flint:  active seniors,  community members in their own faith communities, businesses, social service and non-profit organizations, and academic institutions. Volunteers must be at least 18 years. and successfully pass through the Flint Public School Background Check process by submitting an ICHAT form. Success mentoring is important:  Combat against chronic absenteeism.  Chronic absenteeism of students may result in poor academic achievement, increased school truancy, and dropping out of school altogether. * (Weinstein, Lukas, Director of Regional Initiatives, The Children’s Aid Society, National Center for  Community Schools, childrensaidssociety.org, March 17, 2017, presentation, Flint, MI.) It is also important to look at the various levels of Absenteeism: Satisfactory Attendance:  Missing less than 5% of school days At-risk:  Missing between 5-10% of school days Chronic Absence:  MIssing 10% or more school days. Training of mentors will be provided by Brownell Community Education staff:  focusing on the needs of specific students and their respective academic and behavioral challenges.  Each mentor will be matched with 1 student. It is also important to be aware of the following premise behind the Flint Community Education program:

Flint Community Schools - Community Education Initiative Goals:
Crim Fitness Foundation, Partnership Information Form)

Increased Attendance: Students arrive to school on time, stay all day, and are prepared to learn. Improved 3rd Grade Reading levels: Students are reading at their grade level and meeting their college and career readiness benchmarks. Increased Graduation Rates: Students are successfully graduating from 12th-grade on-time and are prepared to attend a 2-4 year college, complete an apprenticeship, or perform a year of national service. School becomes a resource to the Community: The School provides opportunities for programming and services such as basic needs, health, technology, etc for community members to use.

That's just 60 minutes, 3600 seconds. Our patients are you in your hometown, in their own homes or assisted living centers. The clock is ticking, what are you waiting for?

Let us help you be a difference maker in your community.

Volunteer: Be a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Volunteer! 2020

Play a V.I.T.A.(L) role at tax time. Volunteer!

Our volunteer tax return preparers become IRS-certified and prepare and e-file federal, state and city returns for Genesee County taxpayers with low-to-moderate incomes.

Our quality reviewers work with taxpayers, checking each and every return. This helps to ensure that all entries agree with the documents and other information provided by the taxpayers, that all calculations are correct, and that taxpayers receive the full benefit of the tax law and any deductions and credits to which they are entitled.

Some volunteers prefer not to prepare or review returns but enjoy their role as greeters, providing taxpayers with intake documents and making them feel welcome at the VITA sites.

Interested in opening a new tax site? A site coordinator manages both the volunteers and the site, prepares more difficult returns and answers any questions that may arise.

Training will be provided for all of these volunteer positions.
