Doyle-Ryder Elementary and the Flint Community School Corps are looking for people who can tutor math and/or reading at the 3rd grade level. There are students at different reading levels who need to be caught up, some severely. This would take place on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. All day during school on these days there are slots available to come in and work with these kids. School starts at 8:50 AM, with lunch beginning around 11:20 AM. Lunch ends at 11:50 AM, and then class proceeds until 3:40.

Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring - collecting the "critters" that live in our streams to determine water and habitat quality.

Water Quality Monitoring occurs every Spring and Fall in the Flint River Watershed. Monitoring season spans a 2 week period in which staff and volunteers monitor up to 35 sites across Genesee and Lapeer counties.

Monitoring consists of a group of 2-4 volunteers going to a site, taking various measurements such as water depth and flow, and collecting “benthics” from a preset 300 foot stretch.

Benthics are the macroinvertebrates, like water pennies and dragonfly larvae, that live in the stream. Depending on how many and what type of benthics are found, the stream is then rated with a score from poor to excellent.

That data is compared to previous seasons and reviewed by our monitoring committee. The monitoring data is also shared with local and state agencies (such as the Genesee County Drain Commission, whose generous support helps to maintain this program), as well as on our website, www.flintriver.org.

While monitoring can be wet and cold on occasion, it is always a lot of fun. 

Participating in the Monitoring program does not mean you have to get in the water. Volunteers can help in the lab or on the Monitoring Committee. The monitoring committee meets once a month in Flint and oversees the Monitoring Program. There is always room for new monitors and committee members.

The Family Engagement VISTA will: Engage with families to determine needs & expectations around community education. Create welcoming space in each school for parents & families. Support and facilitate parent/family groups in each school. Serve as a school navigator to help students & families who are transitioning between Flint Community Schools. Serve with the Crim Fitness Foundation, Flint Community Schools (FCS), and other VISTA members to develop the curriculum and plan for the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) Camp for summer 2017. Collaborate with other members to implement other fun, quality, safe and educational programming and activities. Partner with other members, Crim staff, FCS staff and parent/community volunteers to develop at least one day of service event within the school or school community. Attend required meetings and submit required paperwork as set by the Program Manager, the Crim, FCS, and the National Service Accelerator.

Chef Instructor Volunteer

Cooking Matters is a free, six-week-long cooking and nutrition series for low-income families in Genesee County. Classes are taught by Michigan State University Extension nutrition professionals and volunteer chefs.

We partner with host sites including, but not limited to, community centers, clinics, shelters, housing sites, non-profit organizations, and school programs to offer courses throughout the community. Join us and volunteer for our program as a chef!

Chef Job Description:  The chef will work with the nutrition professional to teach basic cooking skills. The classes are intended to be highly participatory cooking demonstrations. It is important to include the participants with various tasks and allow for hands-on learning in the kitchen. Some cooking skills to demonstrate and practice in class are basic cooking techniques and terminology, proper knife handling, various cooking methods, and food safety and sanitation measures.

Chef Qualifications: A graduate of or enrolled in a two-year culinary training program or have at least two years working as a cook or chef. Background check required.

Time Commitment: Classes meet once a week for six weeks. Class day and times vary. Each week, the classes require a time commitment of three hours for preparation, teaching, and clean-up.

The First Tee of Eastern Michigan is looking for quality individuals to help deliver The Life Skills curriculum to children ages 5-17. Candidates will assist The First Tee Coach 1 day a week for 4 hours on the Driving Range, Practice Green and Golf Course.

Volunteers must pass a background check and complete on line training.

General golf knowledge is needed for this position.

As Club members enter, they’re asked to leave all of their book bags, coats, and personal items in the coat room. This volunteer would be responsible for monitoring the coat room and hanging the Club members’ belongings.

We are looking for someone to help clean the kitchen, dishes, and supplies. Volunteers will also help prepare meals. We would like someone who is ServeSafe certified, but it is not a requirement.

Volunteer needed to have fun running an exercise program one time a week for about an hour at a facility in Lapeer.  Lead residents through exercises to look to the right, look to the left, shrug their shoulders, reach up to the sky, etc.  Residents have fun, laugh and smile.  Training and orientation provided.

Volunteers needed for busy office.  Pleasant atmosphere.   Friendly staff!  Office hours 8:30 a.m - 5:00 p.m.   Help out one day a week for four hours.

Program Overview and Purpose of Volunteer Role

Fair Food Network’s Double Up Food Bucks program doubles the value of SNAP benefits, or food stamps, helping people bring home more fruits and vegetables while supporting local farmers. Double Up is available at participating grocery stores and farmers markets across Michigan, and volunteers are essential in spreading the word about the program! The Double Up Food Bucks Local Coordinator will help to establish and lead the local network of outreach volunteers.

Program Overview and Volunteer Role 

Fair Food Network’s Double Up Food Bucks program doubles the value of SNAP benefits, or food stamps, helping people bring home more fruits and vegetables while supporting local farmers. Double 

Up Food Bucks is available at participating grocery stores and farmers markets across Michigan, and volunteers are essential in spreading the word about the program! The Double Up Community Outreach Volunteer will provide local community outreach and participate in community events and meetings, expanding the reach of the program. 

Primary Responsibilities 

* Identify and attend local community events to share information about Double Up Food Bucks. 

* Identify opportunities to and present* about Double Up to community members at organization meetings, events, etc. 

Dates of Service 

June 1st to November 30th 

Time, Training, and Travel 

Time commitment will vary depending on the phase of the program, event and meeting dates, and volunteer preference. Typically, events are between 2 and 4 hours long. Presentations are typically no longer than 30 minutes, but volunteers may choose to stay for questions, comments, and/or the duration of a meeting, which could be up to 2 hours. Volunteers will be paired with either a staff member or other volunteer. The volunteer will receive training on the Double Up program in Michigan and all responsibilities and policies relevant to the role. Local travel to events and community organizations is expected.

Cooking Matters at the Store

Lead adult community members through the aisles of their local supermarket highlighting affordable and healthy food options.

• Complete an online and in-person training

• Order tour materials

• Recruit 6-8 participants to participate in the tour

• Report tour reach by returning participant surveys and tour reporting forms (provided)

Qualifications and Length of Service:

This can be a one-time or ongoing role.

• Be a self-starter

• Preferably have some understanding of nutrition incentives and the Supplemental Assistance Program (SNAP or Bridge)

• Have people and public speaking skills

• Have knowledge of basic nutrition

Volunteers at Gentiva Hospice an affiliate of Kindred at Home are required to attend volunteer orientation. You will get an overview of hospice, the role of the volunteer, working with terminally ill patients and their families. Gentiva Hospice an affiliate of Kindred Healthcare is looking for friendly visitors to volunteer in your community.   Sit with a patient, hold their hand and listen to stories from the past, watch old movies together, or just be there.  Bring a smile to a lonely senior who just likes someone to spend a little time with him or her.  The day and time are flexible to work around your busy schedule.  Volunteer a minimum of 1 hour a week during the day time or evening or week-end.  Training & orientation provided.  Make a difference in someone's life and it will make a difference in yours!

We served 2 meals a day at the North End Soup Kitchen. Our 2nd shift, 2PM to 5:30PM is looking for many volunteers. Our 2nd shift runs Monday through Saturday and need up to 10 people per day.

All the food programs of Catholic Charities, 7 in all, will serve about 500-700 meals per day.

Volunteer times are:
Monday - Saturday
1st Shift, 9am to 1pm
2nd Shift, 2pm to 5:30pm

Sunday - 10:30am to 2:30pm

Hospice provides care and comfort to people with terminal illnesses and provides support to their families, friends, and caregivers.

As a Volunteer, you can help in many ways! If you are at least 14 years old, you can be a Youth Office Volunteer, assisting us with various Office Administrative Duties. If you are at least 18 years old, you can be a Direct Patient Volunteer. These Volunteers visit patients and families, providing care and support through companionship and conversation, reading, writing letters, listening to music, watching movies & TV, playing games, offering care to the pets of the patients and families, helping with light household tasks or yard work, and even sharing hobbies!

High School and College/University students will receive Volunteer Credit! We are also looking for Volunteers with experience as professional beauticians and massage therapist. We are also interested in volunteers who have Certified Pet Therapy animals.

Do you recycle? Do you pick up litter from your neighborhood? Are you frantically running from room to room shutting off lights to save money? Do you use reusable grocery bags at the store? Have you installed a digital thermostat? We want you to help us by sharing your commitment to green living.

Forums educate Flint residents and businesses about environmental concerns that affect them and empower them to make choices that will improve life for all residents. Forums take place in each Ward of the City. Past venues have included schools and the YWCA building.

Green Life generally lasts 1.5 hours.

We are looking for people who like to provide arts and cultural activities in a safe and welcoming environment for residents of Oak Street Senior Apartments in downtown Flint.

Are you great at a particular kind of art (painting, drawing, etc.)? Do you know how to do crafts? How about musical or theatrical abilities? Or perhaps you are knowledgeable in some area and could teach our residents.

We'd love to have you prepare and lead a class for our senior residents.

All activities take place in the activity room  at Oak Street Senior Apartments, 1000 Oak St., Flint, MI 48503.

Activities generally last one hour.

This is a great way for you to share yourself and the things you love with our apartment community. 

Oak Street Senior Apartments are located in the former Oak School building site in downtown Flint. We serve low-income seniors aged 62 and older.

We are looking for people who have experience or special talents in various areas of arts and culture to lead short, one-hour events. Maybe you're great at crafts, acting, or incredibly knowledgeable about some area of cultural interest.

We'd love to have you lead or participate in an event such as a performance, class or activity. You would get to interact with the public, engaging people and promoting learning.

These activities will take place in locations that target low-income families and individuals. Examples of past locations include: a bus terminal, fast food restaurant, and a hospital. Events can be indoors or outdoors.

Culture Shock events generally last one hour and volunteers should plan on arriving 30 minutes before the event starts.

An orientation manual will be provided to Culture Shock volunteers.

We use a high tech computer system to be able to better interact with our dementia residents. We take pictures of our residents and put them on the computer (it is a touch screen) and under that button are the different interests of our residents and "their story."
