This year we will join thousands across America who will clean headstones and beautify VA National Cemeteries. Great Lakes National Cementery is just 1 of 60 across the nation who will host volunteers for Patroits day in partnership with Carry the Load.

Non-emergency medical transportation volunteers are needed for Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee County seniors! Many seniors in our community have no access to medical appointments and you can help!

Our family hosts provide comfort to children who come to Voices for Children for an interview concerning allegations of abuse and/or neglect, witness to violence, etc. Scheduling is flexible, but based on interview schedules between the hours of 9am-5pm. Family hosts typically stay an hour or longer to be a friendly face to a child/family and assist with drinks, toys, games while they are here waiting.

Please help us advocate for local abused and neglected children in the foster care system, become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).

A CASA volunteer is is appointed by a judge to provide consistent and caring support and vital information to the court on behalf of an innocent foster child going through a tough personal legal process due to an adult's abuse or neglect.

As a CASA volunteer, you will receive over 30 hours of training from professionals to get you familiar with the court and child welfare systems and other important aspects of the case including child development, interviewing techniques and cultural competency. You'll be given the tools and personal support you need to aid your search for as much information as possible about a child in order to achieve an objective viewpoint of the child's welfare.

You'll review the case to become familiar with the background, gather new data and then develop a report with your recommendation that is shared in the courtroom, both verbally and written. The report and your testimony becomes one of several important pieces a judge considers when making his or her ruling on behalf of the child.

Skills Dedication: Dedicated volunteers willing to to commit 15-20 hours per month for at least a year. Ability to talk to a variety of people, some of whom will be struggling with their own problems Willing to go through an in-depth training class, and pass a background check. Reliable transportation is important.

Effective communication skills: You should be able to communicate clearly and professionally both orally and in writing to a variety of audiences including the court. You must be computer literate and be able to use word processing and email with consistent access to a computer and the Internet.

During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands-on care and education to disaster-affected clients. The work setting is generally in emergency shelters or on outreach teams in the community. Overview of Mobile Blood Drives

· Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location

· ‘Mobile’ blood drives change almost every day—with the need to setup and takedown each blood drive, they tend to be faster paced, in a variety of sites, with different donors, sponsors, team members, and chargeperson each drive

· Often requires careful maintenance of donor flow and wait times (typically more donors on the schedule)

· Events confirmed about 6 weeks in advance

Overview of Fixed Sites

· Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location

· Blood collection procedures are whole blood and red cell (no platelets or plasma)

· Staff and equipment tend to be ‘ready to go’ in the same site each day--with fewer donors participating on a frequent basis in longer term procedures (some procedures take as long as 2-2.5 hours per donor) at a Red Cross donor center.

· Similar or same: list of donors, team members and charge people from week to week creates sense of team

· Regular donors become familiar with check-in process, materials and site

· Schedule rarely changes, available several months in advance, a weekly shift ‘adoption’ is highly encouraged. For example – one shift every Tuesday morning or afternoon

All Donor Ambassador roles (Mobile Blood Drives and Fixed Sites)

· Support Red Cross staff by being helpful, flexible, and patient

· Greet donors, explain the donation process as necessary and assist with initial intake and hand offs through the blood donation process

· Manage donor flow and direct donors to Check-In

· Model excellent customer service behaviors.

· Ensure blood donors have relevant information and that questions are answered appropriately while creating a favorable impression of the blood donation process.

· Learn and share the Red Cross story, including the mission, vision, and values

· Work with collections team supervisor or charge staff to match donor’s blood type with the best product for maximum impact (Right Type Mix)

· Check Post Donation Info and time

· Set up and maintain cleanliness in Reception and Hospitality Areas

· Provide customer service to donors in the Hospitality Area by ensuring that each donor is recognized for his/her contribution.

· Check that donor has their post-donation information before leaving the drive

· Report possible adverse post-donation physical reactions to the collections staff. Protect donors from injury during adverse reactions (if able without hurting self)

· May be asked to sanitize/disinfect donor areas and beds

· May make reminder/cancellation calls, re-schedule donor appointments, and perform follow up activities as directed

· Encourage donors to download Donor App, use RapidPas

The Medical Team (Hospice) goal is NOT to end life, but to make the end of life as full and meaningful as possible.  Our society tends to run from death and make it a dreadful experience.  Death is one of those four letter words.  We work to help the patient and family recognize and come to terms with issues of grief and loss and to transform these final times into a beautiful process.  It is a journey through pain, but it can be a journey rich with meaning and joy.  And that is why we are here.  Hospice does not hasten death but allows a person to experience a death with dignity and as pain-free as possible.  We want life to be lived to the fullest until the final breath is taken. After the death of one of our patients, we continue to follow-up with the family for the next 13 months through our bereavement program.

Everyone will experience death at some point in their life, whether it is a relative, close family member, or pet.  Your experience as a volunteer can be a fundamental benefit to our patients and their families, whether that means participating in activities with the patient or simply being by their bedside for social support.

Position Specific Responsibilities

Short term emergency shelter project 

Center of Hope in Fenton is renovating 3 large homes to establish much needed emergency shelter for women and children fleeing abuse.  Many of our volunteer construction team are snow birds and will be leaving Michigan for the Winter.   We are looking for people with some building or handyman skills able to help keep the project moving forward.  Basic skills in home improvement, construction, demolition, painting and flooring along with a heart to help those in need are greatly needed.

Hospice Volunteers needed. Bring a little sunshine, fun, and friendship to a lonely lady or gentleman. Visit a hospice patient in your area at nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or their own home. Read to the patient, sing to them, look at pictures together, or just "be there". Volunteer as little as one hour a week making someone happy. Training and orientation provided. No cost to you. The most precious gift that you have to give is your time.

Hospice is an extensive Program for anyone with a diagnosis or decline in health that could limit their life expectancy to 6 months or less if the disease/decline runs its normal course.

At Heart to Heart Hospice our volunteers are a vital part of our hospice team. Together we can help improve the quality of life for hospice patients.

Volunteers provide service to patients in a number of different ways. Depending on your interests, skills, talents, and the amount of time you have, there are a variety of ways that you can help.

Some of the ways our volunteers make a difference in the lives of patients are through......

All volunteers receive orientation and training to ensure they feel comfortable with their tasks. Volunteers are required to be fingerprinted, have a background checks, and receive the two-step TB tests. There is no cost involved to the volunteer. However, we ask that the volunteer commit to being available one time a week. Volunteers must be 18 or older and must provide their own transportation. All volunteers must have covid vaccinated or have an excuse waiver.

We are looking for someone to serve take-out lunches out our backdoor to clients. This position involves helping prepare lunches in the morning and then serving the lunches. The Server will use a drop box system so that they are compliant with COVID-19 safety precautions, greet clients in a friendly manner and fill out a data sheet with client's zip codes, how many lunches served and the number in their household. At the end of the day, Servers will help with some light cleaning.

This position requires someone who is friendly and outgoing, meticulous, has problem solving and critical thinking skills, can do some light lifting and willing to work as a team player. We also need someone who is not afraid to enforce the rules of the Soup Kitchen, i.e. not letting folks inside the building without an appointment, etc.

Pierce Elementary is looking for dedicated individuals to assist with a variety of tasks around the building. One day you may be helping in the community garden, the next setting up for an event, or stuffing food backpacks for scholars to take home. More than willing to work around your schedule! 

Community Ed is seeking volunteers to assist coaches with teaching sports fundamentals to students grades K through 6th.

No experience required; just bring a positive attitude! 

We currently have a group of volunteers we call "Core Construction Crew". These are volunteers that show up between 1 to 4 times a week and help us on all building projects. 

They also help us show new volunteers how to do things at the work site and join us for a strategic construction planning meeting twice a year. At these meetings we go over new projects, discuss how old projects went and talk about ways to improve. Our Core Construction crew plays a huge role in allowing us to do what we do!

Helping  out in the Genesee County Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Help with moving donations, cleaning, and pricing goods. 

Holmes STEM Academy is seeking parents, alumni, and community members to serve as volunteers, mentors, and reading and math lab tutors, or just help with community closet. This is an especially exciting opportunity for education, social work, counseling, psychology, math and ELA majors, to sample "urban middle school life", a vastly underserved and overlooked population,  and be “a part of the solution”, while contributing to the school’s success.  We also have virtual opportunities for those who would like to help us secure monetary funding through grant writing, solicitation of In Kind donations, or helping to recruit more volunteers. The 2022-2023 academic year is going to be an exciting and transformational year at Holmes STEM Academy. Come be a part of a positive change! The Genesee County chapter of the American Red Cross has an urgent need for volunteers to install smoke alarms in homes around Genesee County. Due to the recent tragic fatal home fires, there has been increased demand by residents for free smoke alarm installations. The Red Cross is looking to meet that need as soon as possible.

The front desk receptionist is the first point of contact that a visitor encounters as they walk into our Hunger Solution Center. 

Duties would include: greeting visitors having them sign in, answering and filtering phone calls, light filing. 

This would be on a calendar of events that we would need someone to fill in for vacations, events and such.  Not a every single day of the week position. 

We, the Freeman staff, are looking for people who are interested in helping us clean our playground.

We will be working alongside our volunteers towards the common goal of giving our students a clean and safe outdoor environment for recess and activities. 

Ideally, this would take place once a week for 1-2 hours on either Mon, Tue, Wed, or Thu (in time for the garbage to be disposed of on Friday). The schedule is currently undetermined until we receive our prospective volunteers' schedules.

This opportunity is great for both high school students and adults! Tutors can choose a student who's curriculum best matches their comfort level and knowledge. We will work with you to find a consistent schedule that works for both you and your student.

We are currently seeking a volunteer video editor for our YouTube channel. The volunteer will be responsible for editing, adding references and contact and at times sending out email blast. We are looking to post 2-4 times per month must have experience with adding content to Youtube and Facebook accounts and be willing to volunteer to video content in the Summer and Fall months as well.

South Flint Soup Kitchen is looking for an experienced volunteer dietitian to join our team! We need support in launching our Prescription Food Pantry Program in partnership with Oak Street Health and we need someone who can make food bags specifically catered to people with dietary restrictions. For example, food bags catered to those with diabetes, low sodium diets, heart healthy food bags and more. We have the food and the bags, we just need some education! We will provide volunteers with lunch, special perks throughout the year, letters of recommendation and documented service hours for any community service that they may need to fulfill. We have a beautiful pollinator garden front and center on the DeVries property, and we need your help to keep it looking good all summer long! The garden has a variety of native flowering plants that attract butterflies and other pollinators. During the summer months, weeds grow rapidly, and even some of the pollinator-attracting plants go wild and take over their neighbors in the garden. Volunteers will pull weeds and any plants that are overcrowding. We will show you which plants to keep, and which are weeds.

As a hospice volunteer you can truly change a patient's world by just stopping in to see how they are doing or what activities they did for the day. Many of our patients have no visitors and only interact with staff or other residents who may not have the time to sit and talk. Being a hospice volunteer helps one become more compassionate and empathic. Maybe you already have those qualities and want to use them where they are needed the most. Training to become a volunteer is done at the convenience of your time and location. Visiting the patients will be on your time. No schedules or shifts to follow. Flexibility will be at its finest when you come to volunteer with us.

We are looking to diversify our board.  We would love both experienced and novice to the board by creating the for the first time a student board member position. Board positions are 2 years appointments, the student position is a 1 year position with the option to seek the two year post.  The student position carries less liability and voting rights. We need folks who look to build their leadership skills, we also need specifically an folks with an interest in Archival work, Assistant Treasurer, Assistant Marketing and Social Media Manager.  Board positions are non-paid and no compensation is allowed per the trust. This is an all volunteer board and board members are expected to pay an annual membership fee to initiate their appointment.

The board meets monthly with the exception of December, when we plan a social activity.  We also have a meeting in August geared toward our Strategic Planning and Goals setting of the Committees. (During COVID we have met via Zoom and Google Meet, which offer call in options.) Meeting materials are shared electronically to save on costs.

The LatinX Technology & Community Center is searching for tutors and teacher aids for our Homework Assistance and Academic Enrichment program. 

As we continue to follow the safety protocols provided by the CDC, we see the need for additional aid for local youth and families. Many schools are closed and online learning has become the norm in many households. This has caused a burden for families to ensure the success and security in the way children are learning. In an effort to provide our youth with all the necessary tools and resources they need to succeed, LatinX Flint has initiated the Homework Assistance and Academic Enrichment program. 

Tutors will assist students, in 30-45 minute sessions, for homework completion. For additional assistance, our teacher aids will help students in Math and Language Literacy courses through our Academic Enrichment course. Both our homework assistance and academic enrichment programs are offered online and in-person, at LatinX Flint.

Join Michigan Education Corps for the 2020-2021 school year as a K-3 Reading Corps Interventionist and help kids learn to read using evidence-based, reading interventions. We are looking for people who have a desire to help kids succeed. No experience? No problem. You’ll receive training and ongoing expert coaching throughout the year. Join the team that empowers Michigan kids to reach their highest level of academic achievement in reading and math.

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours per week. Requires 5 days per week. Position starts 1/4/2021  and ends 6/12/2021

Many seniors are living isolated lives. It's difficult for their family to see them and visitors are limited still. Mid-Michigan is working with a resident who just wants someone to come visit him at the facility he lives at in Swartz Creek. He wants to share stories with him, joke with him, and just be present with him. We just ask for one hour a week from you.

Community Education Sports is looking for individuals that are interested in working with students from grade levels of K-2nd and 3rd - 6th to help with teaching and mentoring in many different sports for grades K - 6th.  Each volunteer must be open to working with different students and with the community. This takes place from October 20th through January 25th.  Coaches will be expected to be a positive role model and mentor to participants at one of our 11 elementary buildings.

We help people affected by disasters ranging from home fires to hurricanes by providing food, shelter, clothing, comfort and hope. Each year, volunteers respond to approx. 2,300 local disaster across the state of Michigan.

Disaster Action Team Member:

Training is provided and Local DAT members work a scheduled, on-call shift. Only local volunteers are eligible for national disaster response deployments.

Our volunteer tax return preparers become IRS-certified and prepare and e-file federal, state and city returns for Genesee County taxpayers with low-to-moderate incomes.

Our quality reviewers work with taxpayers, checking each and every return. This helps to ensure that all entries agree with the documents and other information provided by the taxpayers, that all calculations are correct, and that taxpayers receive the full benefit of the tax law and any deductions and credits to which they are entitled.

Some volunteers prefer not to prepare or review returns but enjoy their role as greeters, providing taxpayers with intake documents and making them feel welcome at the VITA sites.

Interested in opening a new tax site? A site coordinator manages both the volunteers and the site, prepares more difficult returns and answers any questions that may arise.

Training will be provided for all of these volunteer positions.

  The Center For Hope Soup Kitchen has one shift and is located in the lower level of the Michael Church 609 E. Fifth Ave, Flint 48503. You can park in the St. Michael Church parking lot.

Come by yourself or with a group.

Mid-Michigan ReSource Warehouse, above the North End Soup Kitchen is open M-F, 9am to 4pm for volunteers to help sort and organize items for other non-profits, churches, and schools to receive. Please call John or Lisa at 810-785-6911 to book your volunteers.

Residential Hospice is searching for people who are truly interested in not just volunteering, but really making a difference.  We are searching for people who are willing to spend time with people who look forward to friendly faces, to sit with a patient in their home to allow the family to be able to get the groceries they need for the week, to play games or make crafts, or a number of other of ways that we can bring dignity and peace to patients and their families during this trying time.  We have patients who live in facilities and some in their own home.

Volunteering in hospice is an incredibly rewarding way of giving back to the community without disrupting your busy school, work, and family life.  We work with you to find the best fit, and you are always in control of your volunteer experience.  Please contact us today if this sounds like a good fit for you

Training provided. You will not be doing direct medical care but other activities to support the hospice patient and family.
