Our volunteer tax return preparers become IRS-certified and prepare and e-file federal, state and city returns for Genesee County taxpayers with low-to-moderate incomes.

Our quality reviewers work with taxpayers, checking each and every return. This helps to ensure that all entries agree with the documents and other information provided by the taxpayers, that all calculations are correct, and that taxpayers receive the full benefit of the tax law and any deductions and credits to which they are entitled.

Some volunteers prefer not to prepare or review returns but enjoy their role as greeters, providing taxpayers with intake documents and making them feel welcome at the VITA sites.

Interested in opening a new tax site? A site coordinator manages both the volunteers and the site, prepares more difficult returns and answers any questions that may arise.

Training will be provided for all of these volunteer positions.

We are currently looking for individuals who are caring and compassionate with hospice patients and who are willing to spend a couple hours a week or month helping patients and families with short term respite care.

Volunteer training will be provided so no background experience is needed.

This volunteer opportunity involves coaching a youth sports team. Coaches will oversee practices and games, as well as communicate any necessary information about the season to families. Coaches will report to the Senior Program Director. 

Volunteers will work with the Durand Boxcar Program at Robert Kerr Elementary in Durand. A variety of tasks may be involved and will depend upon the needs of the program and staff. Volunteers will report to the Durand Boxcar Director. 

Volunteers will participate in a variety of tasks depending upon the needs of each special event. Time commitment will vary. Volunteer will report to the CEO.

Childcare volunteers provide support in the Youth rooms and with special events. Volunteers will report to the Childcare Supervisor.

Program volunteers will assist the Program Director with a variety of tasks including, but not limited to, concessions, check-ins for programs, and organizing participants and teams. Volunteers will report to the Program Director. Time commitment will vary but is usually Saturday mornings and/or one evening a week.

The Medical Team Hospice is in need of crafty people who know how to sew. Many of our patients are having to use catheters and are embarrassed to leave their home or room because of the catheter bag. We would like to be able to provide our patients with catheter bag covers so they can go out and about in style! Materials will be provided. (This would be a project you would do at your own home)

Every Saturday we pass out water to the community at out church. If you are in need of volunteer hours please sign up with us today. 

Eisenhower Elementary is currently looking for engaging, committed adults to volunteer for after-school tutoring during our Community Education Programming. You will be assisting YouthQuest and AmeriCorps members with homework help for K-6th students and engaging our young scholars during that time. We accept people from all walks of life from around the community and the tutoring time is from 3:00pm to 3:30pm, Monday through Thursday and we are looking for someone that can tutor at least 1-2 times a week.

If you are interested, please complete the background check form provided by Eisenhower with a copy of your state I.D or drivers license. Training and orientation on the roles and responsibilities of our volunteers as well as school policies and procedures will be provided by the Eisenhower Community Education staff.

UAW/United Way Ramp program is in need of volunteers to help build ramps in Genesee County. The program provides assistance to disabled citizens in the community through the construction of residential wheelchair ramps. 

In partnership with the UAW, United Way is working to improve the lives of disabled residents by offering them access to the community through building wheelchair ramps. Since the mid-1980s, UAW/GM volunteers and United Way respond to requests from disabled and elderly citizens who need wheelchair accessibility for their home. Because of the skill and generosity of dedicated volunteers, the Ramp Program volunteers make it possible for relatives, friends and neighbors to go to doctor appointments, church, run errands, visit friends and relatives, and have an active lifestyle.

The Adult Learning Center at Swayze Court Apartments will help residents reach their educational goals. Individualized lessons, private tutoring sessions, and various resources will guide participants as they accomplish their goals. Subjects include, but are not limited to: reading, math, study skills and budgeting. Tutoring appointments will be made based on the availability of the tutor. Once the tutor begins tutoring, we strongly encourage the tutor to remain committed to their tutee(s).

This is for instances where teachers or staff may ask you to do something unrelated to any of the opportunities listed on DTM's agency page. 

Are you looking for a way to be the change in your community? How would you like to spend your extra time mentoring students at a local elementary school? We are looking for dedicated students who are willing and want to help change the world. Durant-Tuuri-Mott elementary school is at risk of being overtaken by the state unless we get our student attendance up. You have the power to help us do that through our successful mentoring program. Your mentoring may very well be the only thing that these students look forward to and may be the only reason they have a desire to come to school on any given day. The work will be challenging since a lot of our students are dealing with real challenges in their personal life, but the work you do will be rewarding. You will be able to see their attendance improve and you will be able to be the role model they may not have in their life.

Mentors will be responsible for meeting with their mentee 2 days a week either during lunch time 11:50-1:10, or after school hours from 4:00-4:20pm. Training will be provided. Mentors will be responsible for meeting with their mentee for the remainder of the school year. 

Applicants will need to fill out an ICHAT form and be subjected to a background check which can take up to a month to be completed. 

Volunteers act as a liaison between patients’ families and surgical and recovery staff. Responsibilities include checking in surgery patient’s families, updating patient progress to families, and providing overall comfort to the Surgical Lounge.

The Emergency Department (ED) is a busy place. In some cases, patients and families may be waiting for a significant amount of time before receiving updates, which can result in frustration and fear. The goal of the ED Ambassador program is to provide patients and families with updates by providing an additional resource person who will act as a liaison between the health care team and the patient.

The ED Ambassador will be able to provide the patient and family with a familiar face to soothe anxiety and frustration, and will facilitate a connection between the patient/family and the health care team. His or hers primary role is to make rounds in the ED Waiting Room and patient rooms. When making rounds the ED Ambassador will introduce him or herself to the patients and their families and let share with them that he or she are there to make their stay as comfortable as possible and keep them updated.

Helping Hands: Under the direction of Outpatient Surgery. Depending on the patient census volunteer will be directed to volunteer in one of the following areas: Outpatient Surgery, GI Lab or Interventional Radiology.

Compassionate Care: Under the direction of Nursing Manager and Patient Support Services. Compassionate Care Volunteers provide emotional support for our patients during their hospitalization.

Lobby Shop: The lobby shop provides a great service to our patients and visitors along with being the biggest volunteer-diven fundraiser. Proceeds from the Lobby Shop go to support hospital endeavors.

Surgical Lounge: Surgical Volunteers keep patient families and visitors informed on the surgery process.

Clerical/Administration: These volunteers process provide clerical support for various departments.

Guest Relations: Greet and escort patients and vistiors throughout the facility.

Many nursing units: Emergency, Peds, Mother/Baby, Cardiac, Oncology, Post-Partum, etc.

The Hurley Medical Center Lobby Shop is the largest contributor to the Hurley Foundation. The shop, voted one of the best places to shop in Genesee County is the perfect place to connect with HMC staff, patients and visitors and participate in the inventory, ordering and scheduling of this major operation in which our organization relies on.

We need someone with some gardening experience to take on the task of planting, maintaining, and gathering fruit and vegetables from our garden. If you love to get your hands dirty and being one on one with nature, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

Life Coaches are caring individuals who provide another person with support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement, and a constructive example.  A Life Coach is a trusted and faithful friend who listens, supports, and guides a Returning Citizen.  A good Life Coach listens for hopes and dreams about how things could be better and picks up on the passions that appear to inspire the person, but also the obstacles and anchors that pull the person down.

Life coaching is a structured and trusting relationship that brings people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support, and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the Returning Citizen.  In this relationship, one person (the Life Coach) comes alongside another person (the Returning Citizen) helping him to reach his potential by enhancing self-worth and developing specific knowledge and skills to increase the chance of succeeding in life.  

Enjoy being able to work one-on-one with students or in small groups helping students with reading or math skills. The things volunteers work on will vary based on what the teachers think the strongest need in their classroom is. Volunteers are welcome during school hours for this opportunity, there is a separate response if volunteers want to help out after school with tutoring as well.

It is a great opportunity to gain experience in education, especially if you're an educator or plan to pursue a career in education. But even if you're not in the education field, this type of volunteer experience gives you the chance to work one-on-one with individuals or small groups, allowing you to connect deeply with the people you work with We looking for tutors of all levels (Middle Schools/High School). If you're looking to get involved in the community and/or even in Flint schools, success mentoring is a great opportunity. Success mentors are assigned 3 - 4 students, whom they will meet with at least once per week. This is really just spending the time with the student to form a bond so success mentors can make an impact on the students life. This may include just talking, coloring, playing basketball, helping the student with homework, having lunch together, etc. This typically takes place during the students lunch time or after school so they do not have to miss any class time.

The Clio Center for the Arts is a non-profit organization looking for a volunteer to keep our Facebook Page, Instagram site, Clio Center for the Arts website, and various other posting sites up to date and fresh.  Our goal is to set up social media sites and advertising programs that would help promote the Clio Center for the Arts.

This person would be responsible for promoting the art center and getting the word out into the surrounding community in various advertising formats. Working at various times with the Director of Classes, Event Coordinator, Director of Funding, Art Center President and teachers.

This position would require skills in computer proficiency, ability to multi-task, attention to detail, and ability to work with people. Beginning with possibly 1-2 days a week until everything is running smoothly, then the schedule would be at their discretion with the President’s approval.

Assist with delivering various activities and clubs with K-6 students during after school hours. 

The mission of the Weiss Advocacy Center is to prevent child abuse and help survivors become children again. It was named in honor of Judge Robert E. Weiss of Flint (1940-2009) who loved children, and spent much of his life protecting them in his role as Genesee County prosecutor and later, as chief probate judge.  Weiss provides forensic interviews, family advocate, a therapy dog to children throughout the entirety of their ordeal at the center and at court, and support groups for non-offending caregivers and their children.  The CASA program is also run at the center providing advocates for Foster Children at the center. 

We always have projects that need to be done.  If you have a passion for children and a desire to serve in these areas please contact us.

Volunteers are needed to help sort clothes and to assist parents while they shop the Baby Pantry. If you are interested in giving your time and smiling at babies and children, please fill out the Background Check Authorization, Central Registry Clearance Request Form, Confidentiality Policy and Pledge, and the  Letter to Volunteers Volunteer Application or stop by our office and complete it in person.

To assist the instructor in the art of various styles of dance, choreograph routines for assemblies and showcases.

Assist other staff members with a variety of different tasks during their lunch and learn activity. Be responsible for helping out the staff member and helping out the students with their tasks.

You will be responsible for helping to refill our water throughout the school. The water containers are heavy and can be hard to lift into their container. Must be able to lift 20lbs or more.

It is typically needed on Wednesday morning before school or Fridays after school.

Just an hour a week can change a students life! At Pierce Elementary, there is a need for adult mentors to spend time with at-risk students. Our students need adults as caring role models to spend time, eat lunch, read with them, and play games. Studies show that mentoring increases student success, attendance, and esteem. It is incredible to see the difference mentoring makes! Volunteer at Pierce and have fun, getting to know our students!

Mentors will meet with their student Mondays and Fridays during the students lunch. First lunch is from 11:30am-12:00pm, second lunch is 12:30pm-1:00pm.

Training of mentors will be provided by Pierce Community Education staff: focusing on the needs of specific students and their respective academic and behavioral challenges.  Each mentor will be matched with 1 student.

To assist Kitchen staff in preparing food, packaging meals, doing dishes, wiping tables, wrapping silverware, stocking inventory.

Help the office with day to day tasks such as filing and data entry. Must be able to work with computers. If you still want to help in schools, but might not want to work one on one with children, this would be a great opportunity for you!

There is a distinct need for adult mentors to spend time with Eisenhower Elementary students.  Our students need adults as caring role models to spend time, eat lunch, read with them, work on thier academic success, and play games.The Eisenhower Community Education office is looking for volunteer mentors over the age of 18 who are available anytime during our lunch period between 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. during the lunch period. Note:Each grade’s lunch period is 30 minutes.

There will also be opportunities available during our Community Education programming starting at 3:30 pm Monday - Friday.  We are also always looking for volunteers to assist with Community Education events and Eisenhower school events throughout the year.We would like our volunteer mentors to be available for their mentees at least 1-2 times a week.

We’re looking for volunteers involved in all walks of life in Flint:active seniors,  community members in their own faith communities, businesses, social service and non-profit organizations, and academic institutions. Volunteers must be at least 18 years. and successfully pass through the Flint Public School Background Check process by submitting an ICHAT form.

Success mentoring is important in the battle against chronic absenteeism.  Chronic absenteeism of students often results in poor academic achievement, increased school truancy, and dropping out of school altogether. It is also important to look at the various levels of Absenteeism:

Training of mentors will be provided by Eisenhower Community Education staff,focusing on the needs of specific students and their respective academic and behavioral challenges.  Each mentor will be matched with at least 1 student.

To teach scholars the various aspects of FLL robotics and prepare them for robotics competitions.

To assist in providing positive mentoring for male students 4th - 6th grades.

To assist in teaching scholars the fundamentals of playing the violin and preparing for a concert.

To assist scholars grades K-6th  with basic math concepts, inhance reading levels and help student reach grade level or beyond in both subjects.

We will offer our summer camp throughout June and July of 2019, volunteers will take the students to the various programs that will be offered, pass out snack, and potentially run a few programs. 

With our partnership with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, some of our great parent and volunteers team up to fill over 80 backpack full of food for our students each week. The volunteer would be responsible for helping students with homework, as well as tutoring students in need with core subjects such as math, science, reading and writing. This opportunity will happen after school for an hour roughly 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

We will show a movie on the last Saturday of every month. The movies will be kid friendly, and there must be a parent present for the student to attend. 

United Way of Genesee County has awarded Lake Fenton Community Schools a grant for our first K-5 Project Read! campaign.  This allows students to take part in after school and summer programming to increase access to books, to instill a lifelong love of reading, and to support our students through essential literacy practices.  

We are always looking for access to diverse, high interest, high quality books for K-5 students to have access to throughout our programming.

We can work into your group's schedule during the spring, summer, and fall for a unique volunteer opportunity that spreads awareness of the simple steps anyone can take to protect YOUR Flint River.

The Storm Drain Stenciling program is part of the Our Water Campaign to promote storm water awareness in Genesee County. Our volunteer groups stencil the message “Dump No Waste, Drains to River,” near the storm drains and walk the neighborhood to distribute door hangers that provide information on how to reduce pollution that makes it into the storm drains. 

You can volunteer anywhere in Genesee County, including the City of Flint, Grand Blanc Township, the City of Clio, and the City of Grand Blanc. Adults and children of all ages are welcome to volunteer with this program to protect the waters of the Flint River.

Residential Hospice is searching for people who are truly interested in not just volunteering, but really making a difference.

We are searching for people who are willing to spend time with people who look forward to friendly faces, to sit with a patient in their home to allow the family to be able to get the groceries they need for the week, to play games or make crafts, or a number of other of ways that we can bring dignity and peace to patients and their families during this trying time.  We have patients who live in facilities and some in their own home.

Volunteering in hospice is an incredibly rewarding way of giving back to the community without disrupting your busy school, work, and family life.  We work with you to find the best fit, and you are always in control of your volunteer experience.
