Volunteer: Emergency Department Ambassador

The Emergency Department (ED) is a busy place. In some cases, patients and families may be waiting for a significant amount of time before receiving updates, which can result in frustration and fear. The goal of the ED Ambassador program is to provide patients and families with updates by providing an additional resource person who will act as a liaison between the health care team and the patient.

The ED Ambassador will be able to provide the patient and family with a familiar face to soothe anxiety and frustration, and will facilitate a connection between the patient/family and the health care team. His or hers primary role is to make rounds in the ED Waiting Room and patient rooms. When making rounds the ED Ambassador will introduce him or herself to the patients and their families and let share with them that he or she are there to make their stay as comfortable as possible and keep them updated.

HELP encompasses a group of specialized volunteers trained to assist senior patients with mobility and basic needs. During the day, they engage with patients at the bedside in activities like cards, trivia, music or reading, plus provide companionship and assistance with feeding at mealtimes. At night, the volunteers work with healthcare providers to help promote relaxation through music, dimmed lights and a light massage. The program is designed to prevent delirium, falls and functional decline in patients 70 and older, with the ultimate goal of ensuring they retain their maximum level of independence upon returning to their communities.

Helping Hands: Under the direction of Outpatient Surgery. Depending on the patient census volunteer will be directed to volunteer in one of the following areas: Outpatient Surgery, GI Lab or Interventional Radiology.

Compassionate Care: Under the direction of Nursing Manager and Patient Support Services. Compassionate Care Volunteers provide emotional support for our patients during their hospitalization.

Lobby Shop: The lobby shop provides a great service to our patients and visitors along with being the biggest volunteer-diven fundraiser. Proceeds from the Lobby Shop go to support hospital endeavors.

Surgical Lounge: Surgical Volunteers keep patient families and visitors informed on the surgery process.

Clerical/Administration: These volunteers process provide clerical support for various departments.

Guest Relations: Greet and escort patients and vistiors throughout the facility.

Many nursing units: Emergency, Peds, Mother/Baby, Cardiac, Oncology, Post-Partum, etc.
