Who We Are

We are Jennifer Silverton and Teresa White. Our sons, Aidan and Tyler, grew up together within Grand Blanc Community Schools. We watched our sons enjoy the inclusive and relationship-rich experience of the school environment only to have it all disappear upon graduation. Sitting around playing video games for hours on end was not what we wanted for our children, especially since were aware of how many young adults with Intellectual Disabilities easily settled into a life with little to no interaction with their peers. Often times, parents work outside the home and the individual might not have access to transportation which makes it extremely challenging to continue to grow, find employment, and maintain relationships. Xceptional Heroes has been a true grass-roots effort. We started by simply creating recreational outings for our “kids” which then drew interest from other families experiencing the same challenges. Our Heroes look forward to the events and feel a real sense of connection with their peers. We have big plans and cannot wait to watch our “Heroes” soar!

What We Do

Xceptional Heroes offers a variety of social, recreational and life skills activities for young adults, ages high school and up. Activities include, but are not limited to, bingo, corn hole, bowling, restaurant dining, fitness days at the park, ice cream socials, cooking lessons and occasional specialty outings such as a visit to the Detroit Zoo, the Renaissance Festival, theater trips and more. All activities are peer-led with neurotypical volunteers to promote community inclusion. All activities always include some life skills components such as money & time management and problem solving.
