Who We Are

Our shelter is home to more than meets the eye. In fact, we may have 100 “guests” on a daily basis! While our main facility mostly houses dogs and cats, we occasionally have rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and more. There’s a whole bevy of loving animals waiting to meet you and your family today!

We were fortunate to start our organization back in 1951 and we’ve successfully kept our doors open for well over 60 years now. It’s taken a lot of love, hard work and dedication, but the animals make every day a joy for us!

What We Do

Our mission is to provide caring solutions for the unmet needs of the local pet population in Shiawassee County.

The Shiawassee Humane Society ensures the humane treatment of companion animals in need by providing temporary shelter and care, finding permanent homes for adoptable pets, and engaging in public advocacy and community education, with an emphasis on population control.

History

The Shiawassee Humane Society (SHS) was incorporated in 1954. SHS first operated out of homes, in conjunction with animal control, and ultimately in a separate facility on Hibbard Road. In 1977, the shelter opened the doors of its new facility and current location, on Bennington Road. Over the years, the facility has been remodeled, and in 2000 a fund was started to expand the size of the facility. That expansion was completed in 2003, and for several years, updates were made to the “old” sections of the facility to make it better fulfill its function as a shelter.

Adoptions

The Shiawassee Humane Society offers adoptions by:

  • Providing pets that are of a personality and temperament to be companion pets.

  • Screening potential adopters and matching the needs of the pet and the needs of the adopter.

  • Collaborating with other organizations to find temporary and permanent homes for companion animals.

  • Developing and offering financial assistance programs to make adoption available for all income levels.

Fostering

The Shiawassee Humane Society provides for the basic needs, care and comfort of the companion animals in its care. However, there is no place like home for a pet to relax, de-stress and learn positive behaviors that will lead it to its forever home.

Fostering a shelter pet is an awesome responsibility that offers many rewards. Foster homes are a critical link between homelessness and a stable life for a shelter pet. Foster families are a special breed of human who recognize that their love, care and attention is the best, possible solution for a companion animal who is waiting for its forever family. If you are one of these very special humans, please consider fostering a shelter pet today.
