Hi I'm Olivia Rutherford. I graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor's in Social Relations and Policy. I am currently serving as a Community Resource Developer VISTA at Durant-Tuuri-Mott (DTM) elementary school through AmeriCorps. I love spending my time with my family, friends, and dog normally while watching Netflix. I've lived my whole life in areas surrounding Flint but have never actually dove into Flint until I started serving at DTM. I absolutely have loved all the opportunities it has given me to know the people and places in Flint better. I love the fact that every day without fail I have a large number of students who call out "Miss Olivia" and then proceed to give me a huge hug. It has also opened my eyes to a lot of the hardships and barriers that people in Flint have faced and continue to face every day. I want to be able to help them in any way that I can, and DTM is incredibly good about helping out everyone in the community as well as their own students. I am grateful for every minute I get to spend with these incredible students and for every opportunity that AmeriCorps and DTM has given me.

Durant-Tuuri-Mott will be hosting a "Fall Into Reading" family night on October 22nd from 4-6pm. We are excited to incorporate family fun with some type of academic learning. Reading and reading comprehension are skills that will benefit not only our students but their families as well. With the state of the school the way it is, we are looking to improve our reading scores on the K-3rd standardized test. We want to make sure that this event not only benefits our students but also our parents and families. It is a good way to focus our energy to help engage families and students together while still remaining within academic parameters.

I hope that everyone will be just as excited to work with these families as I have been the last couple weeks I have been serving here. They are a great bunch.
