Start Your Holiday Season with a Gift to Benefit Many
WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY?
#GivingTuesday is a global movement held annually the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – this year on November 27, 2018. The effort goes along with Black Friday and Cyber Monday but, instead of encouraging people to shop for themselves, the idea is to give to others (whether that be a monetary gift, volunteer time, donated materials, etc.). Again this year, several Shiawassee area non-profit organizations are working together to celebrate #GivingTuesday, as a community under the collaborative hashtag of #raiseUPshiawassee.
The Arc is dedicated to empowering people with developmental disabilities in our county. Tobey House needs repairs of 15k to continue offering a place to call home in our community.
Types of needed repairs: replace 25 yr old appliances, repair/rebuild handicap-accessible ramp & porch, gutters & down spouts, windows.
Currently five people with developmental disabilities are living independently in Tobey House. This house should be a beacon of hope and inclusion in our community. We cannot make that happen with out your help! Donate to The Arc Shiawassee on November 27th 2018. #GIVINGTUESDAY
As a non-profit funds are not always with in our reach to do major updates/repairs. #GivingTuesday is a great way to raise awarness in our community and ask for financial support at the same time. It is a a win win.
#GivingTuesday is also about giving back to the community. The Arc Shiawassee will be collecting items for an RESD classroom. Their wish list is elementary aged non-fiction books about animals, dinosaurs and insects and younger age board games.

HISTORY OF TOBEY APARTMENTS
In 1990 the Arc Shiawassee applied for a Stewart M. McKinney Housing Grant from HUD/MSHDA, the grant was awarded the following year, and used to purchase the Tobey Apartments (named after Dorothy Tobey the Executive Director at the time) with housing for five more tenants. It was formally opened on March 15, 1992.
Inclusion in the community is not just an organizational mission, it is a personal mission to advocate for those that cannot advocate for themselves. Tobey house is independent living in an apartment. There are no shared spaces such as a kitchen, bathroom or dining room like you might find in a group home or AFC home. Unlike an apartment complex, Tobey House is specifically for those individuals with developmental disabilities. Helps us repair/update Tobey House. Donate to The Arc Shiawassee.
