Board Member Policies

Board composition: The board will attempt to maintain a board where
- All board members have a strong interest and concern for environmental issues and environmental education especially as relates to For-Mar.
- All board members share the Merkley vision for For-Mar as expressed in the original deed:
“[For-Mar]…be used in perpetuity…for public park purposes for Nature Study, Nature Trails, Arboretums, Wild Life Sanctuary, Conservation Education…and the property be maintained in its natural state insofar as this is consistent with these stated purposes.”
- Board members represent a broad spectrum of the community with respect to age, gender, race/ethnic background, and area of the county.
- Board members as a group possess a variety of experiences and skills, including but not limited to: resource management, horticulture, naturalist, environmental education, law, finance and accounting, and fundraising.
Roles and Responsibilities: Board Members have the responsibility to provide governance to the organization, represent it to the community, and accept the ultimate legal authority for it. Board members:
- Are members of the Friends of For-Mar.
- Stay informed about For-Mar activities and developments.
- Participate actively in fund raising efforts including developing contacts with people and organizations.
- Attend at least 70% of all board meetings (amended to add: unless otherwise excused).
- Come prepared to meetings having reviewed materials sent prior to the meeting.
- Speak their mind and ask hard questions.
- Serve on committees or task forces and offer to take on special assignments.
- Are good stewards of the financial assets of the organization.
- Visit For-Mar and/or participate in a program at least twice per year.
- Promote For-Mar and encourage volunteerism at For-Mar.
Advocate for Friends of For-Mar to other organizations, businesses, and friends.
