Why stencil storm drains? Storm drains are designed to drain excess rain from paved streets and sidewalks. Many people believe that anything traveling down a storm drain will be cleaned by a water treatment plant, in the same way as waste water is from our homes. In reality, sewer systems clean only water from household fixtures such as toilets and sinks while water from storm drains are emptied straight into waterways without being treated. This means that hazardous chemicals are dumped into our local bodies of water, posing health risks and harming our environment. Stenciling neighborhood storm drains with pollution prevention messages will educate the public, informing them that no trash should be thrown in or near a storm drain.
