Description

Prepare Our Community for Emergency and Crisis Situations

It’s been more than 20 years since 9/11. To commemorate this occasion, we ask you to honor those we lost and heroes of that fateful day by uniting in service to rekindle the spirit of unity and service that swept our nation after that tragic day.

On September 9th from 8:30-12:30 PM, volunteers are invited to come together at our local American Red Cross for a morning of disaster preparedness education and service. Certified Red Cross trainers will educate volunteers on life-saving resources, AmeriCorps members will lead volunteers in hygiene kit packing, and volunteers will have the chance to donate blood and platelets through the Disaster Preparedness Stations.

Disaster Preparedness Stations

Be Red Cross Ready: Be introduced to general preparedness principles about why it's important to prepare, what to prepare for, and how to prepare. Volunteers will be introduced to Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Be Informed, as well as useful American Red Cross disaster resources.

Hands-Only CPR (Non-Certificate) Training: Teaches untrained bystanders how to preform hands only CPR. This saves lives by putting more cardiac arrest victims within a few steps of lifesaving assistance. No formal assessments, no certification. It is taught by a certified Hands-Only CPR Presenter.

Fire Extinguisher Simulator: Learn how to use a fire extinguisher and be equipped to save lives and homes with proper training and education. Each volunteer will get a chance to use the simulator after being trained.

Hygiene Kit Maker Station: Pack essential hygiene kits with toiletries like soap, toothpaste, and deodorant that will be carried by first responders on duty. The Genesee County Sheriff's Department expressed a need for these kits that officers can distribute to community members in need.

9/11 Remembrance Blood Drive: Donate blood or platelets during the Day of Service.  We ask that you sign up  to donate while joining us on 9/9/22 in advance on the Red Cross website at www.redcrossblood.org.

SHARE: 9/11 Remembrance Blood Drive (September 9th – 16th)

Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood so the 9/11 Remembrance Blood Drive will be open all week following the Day of Service. Community members will have the chance to donate blood as an act of kindness in remembrance of 9/11 from September 9th – 16th.

We are asking volunteers that attend the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance share this opportunity with your networks and encourage others to join our service by donating. Every donor will make a difference in the lives of fellow community members. Upon donating at the Red Cross between 9/9/22 - 9/16/22, each donor will receive a special gift from us for mentioning "AmeriCorps Get Things Done", or "9/11 Remembrance".
