Mott Community College is hosting Pack Your Back and Little Miss Flint - Mari Copeny to stuff 15,000 back packs for local children. Volunteers are needed to:
- unload trucks of supplies
- open and sort school supplies
- stuff back packs with supplies
- help distribute loaded back packs
We respectfully request that anyone between the ages of 10-17 be accompanied by an adult.
The story: Pack Your Back and 11-year-old local activist, ‘Little Miss Flint’ Mari Copeny have joined forces to provide support to thousands of students and teachers for the start of the 2018/2019 school year. Select schools throughout Flint, Michigan will be the recipients of over 10,000 STATE backpacks, filled with supplies for success, that will be distributed to each student on the first day of school.
“The only way a student can succeed in the classroom is by having the proper tools and resources needed to do so,” said Galen Miller, Executive Director of Pack Your Back. Students who do not attend these select schools can still receive a backpack and supplies from a School Supply Distribution on August 31 at the Mott Community College Event Center starting at 4:00 p.m. The remaining 5,000+ backpacks will be distributed at this event on a first come, first serve basis.
In addition to backpacks, Pack Your Back and Little Miss Flint will be providing support to teachers in Flint, Michigan by creating an online database where teachers can request items that are needed for their classrooms. “Teachers often carry the burden of purchasing school supplies for their classrooms due to the lack of funding,” said Galen Miller, Executive Director of Pack Your Back. “We are eager and grateful for the opportunity to assist not only students, but teachers as well.”
Pack Your Back: Pack Your Back was started by a group of CMU students and alumni in March 2016 and were officially approved as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in May 2016. They began collecting funds and school supplies to donate to the children of Flint and beyond.
