Description

We aplogogize to those registered who have not recieved the KNOW BEFORE YOU GO email, with instructions for the day. We are trying to find the issue. We are unsure if it is with the Genesee Serves site, or the firewall at our office as we did move locations recently. Here is the information for those ALREADY REGISTERED:

As a reminder you have registered for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service! What do you need to Know Before You Go?

Date and Time:
Monday, January 20, 2025
Check-in opens at 8:30 and the opening program will begin at 9:00am. The volunteer event will end by 1pm at the latest with a boxed lunch from Jersey Mikes for you to take with you.

Location:
Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center
3501 Lapeer Rd, Flint, MI 48503                                You will enter through the main Event Center doors.

Parking:
The parking area at the Event Center will be open and Free.

Photos and Social Media:
We encourage you to share your experience at the event on social media. Please use #MLKDay and #LiveUnited. We will be taking photos at the event for use on our social media and other items.

Dress and Personal Items:
Please feel free to dress casually with comfortable closed-toe shoes as you are on a concrete floor. We are also in a arena that is cooler than the average room. Please plan accordingly. (*AmeriCorps Members: please be sure to wear an AmeriCorps branded shirt!) As we are packing food items, keeping the area sanitized is key. This prevents us from allowing personal items on the work stations. We do not have space to lock personal items so please limit what you bring. There will be an area for coats. Bottled water will be available at the event.

Other details:
We are so excited to have 700+ people registered for this event. We have NOT  pre-assigned each volunteer to a line. After check-in at the event, try to get with your group prior to the program start.

You will be standing for the majority of this event, however there will be a seating area for those needing a rest. The floor is concrete!

We thank you again for taking your time to volunteer. We are excited to be honoring Dr. King's legacy by taking this "day off" as a day to serve others and combat the social ill of hunger. At the end of the morning, we will have packed 200,000 meals for Genesee County Families.

"Everybody can be great, because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" to serve. You don't have to know the Second Theory of Thermal Dynamics in Physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love." - Excerpted from "The Drum Major Instinct", a sermon by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1968.

Dr. King believed that many social ills could be defeated through citizen service. Recognizing that 1 in 5 Genesee County families deal with hunger, we are setting out to combat this by engaging neighbors to help neighbors.

Please join us for a day ON rather than a day off on Martin Luther King Jr. Day! We will be packing 200,000 meals to provide to local Genesee County residents who are experiencing food insecurity.

No experience needed and all ages can participate - great for kids (ages 5+).

Registration is required for each volunteer. Lunch will be provided.
